Welcome back. Waterboarding is fairly straight forward and fits the definition of torture, and it always has. There’s a little nerve just above your “eye-socket” when pushed simulates the feeling of getting your eyes gouged out, but is otherwise fairly harmless. Nothing says torture has to leave permanent physical damage.
We know when life begins…and when it ends. It’s the definition of what life is people have difficulty grasping.
Why is Thomas Paines comment about Japanese water torture over the line? Maybe it’s not the same thing as waterboarding, but the idea of torture is not necessarily death. It’s the pain or threat of pain inflicted. The sensation of drowning is torture. I assure you we the people of the United States are just as capable of foul deeds as the Japanese…as my ancestors can attest.
But come on…let’s put the waterboarding thing to bed. The majority says it’s torture, you say it’s not. We can agree that it’s not something we as Americans should be engaging in. McCain a former POW who served honorably is against it. And I think we should be above that sort of uncivilized thing.
One last thing if the Japanese water torture method utilized a naso-gastric to suck out the water thereby causing little cell damage thereby making it non-lethal, but caused the same amount of discomfort to our service personnel would you still be against it? Would you still believe the Japanese torturers deserved death?
