The right is in the wilderness, trying to regroup. They have forgotten the face of their father.
“I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism.” – Ronald Reagan.
Excerpt:
- “If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.”

The conservative movement in America has been in the back seat for over twenty years. In 1988, America went for a country club moderate named George H. W. Bush. An honorable public servant, war hero, and former DCI (Director of Central Intelligence), you would think this was a man built for the White House.
Unfortunately, he raised taxes after promising not to do so, and suffered defeat at the hands of a “new” Democrat.
After two terms of the “new” Democrat, Amercia had enough of being told politically corrupt lawyers were a new idea. George W. Bush was chosen to lead.
He came out with “compassionate conservatism”, which is big government spending with an elephant stamp on it instead of a donkey stamp.
After two terms of squeaker close elections and crazy spending, the Republican party decided this was still a winning formula.
Unfortunately for everyone, America chose the party that actually knows how to raise taxes and spend our money.
This lead to the thinking that President Bush pushing us into socialism was not moderate enough. It was too much of a right wing idea, that stinkin’ socialism.
Now, after more than two decades, the modern Republican is blinded by facts like, Reagan had back to back landslides. The second also outperformed the first by 10 points.
This was brought about because Reagan married the social aspects of the Christian community with fiscal responsibility. The social aspects did not dominate the platform in the form of policy however. That winning policy was mostly libertarian.
It was a fiscal responsibility married to an optimism unseen in American politics in many years, decades in fact. A leader who did not compromise himself out the gate with phony deference for what his opponents think. A leader that exuded real confidence, not bluster, who was unafraid to challenge foreign leaders who acted against our interests.
This is what America is dying for today. The pale shadow of leadership that is the Obama Administration would flee the room once the lights were turned on. With financial ruin brought on by basic irresponsibility by many of our citizens, an Islamic Jihadist revival targeting us, and a culture sharply divided between loving and hating America’s heritage, the people are waiting for real deliverance.
